Round One

Serpent's Match

"The first match between Zailon Raphal and Ofiuca Zmiaja will begin shortly.  Contestants please report to your gates!"

The Ophiuchus looked up from her work, polishing her strife weapons for the upcoming match.  She smiled, feeling a little sweaty and nervous about the upcoming fights, but exilhirated at the same time.  She looked proudly at her assortment of weapons, each laced with a different toxin.  Not her quickest and most lethal varieties of course, she'd heard that the highbloods watching the match wouldn't like it if things ended too quickly.  She quickly and carefully stored away her cleaning supplies and slipped her weapons into their places on he person.  It was truly amazing what a determined troll could hide on her body if she knew how... and had the right kinds of weapons.  Medissassins had the coolest stuff ever!  She hurried down the halls to her gate and waited for the doors to open.

Hers would be the first.  The first.  This would be one of the first times she fought for her life, and it was against a stranger.  Would that make it easier?  Harder?  More fun? More terrifying?

She spun one of her blades around on her fingers reflexively, flipping it around.  She could feel her two needle-like fangs quivering in their retracted positions, aching to extend in response to her anxious and excited mood.  'Calm down, Zai.'  She thought to herself.  'It'sss not even open yet.....'

She almost bit her tongue as the doors let out a loud and sudden clack, then swung open ominously.  She twirled her blades in her grip again before slipping them away and going in.  Almost instantly, she fell in love with it.  The crags, the gloom, the spires, the chains, the heat radiating up from below...

It was perfect.  Well, almost.  It would have been better if there had been mist or fog, but that would defeat the purpose of the Hightop.  It was a spectator sport, after all.

It didn't really matter in the end.  The rest of the arena provided her with everything she needed.  She started off, looking for her opponent and wondering who this Ofiuca would be and what she looked like.  She started over the rocky landscape, in slight wonder at the variety of skulls and horns and bones she saw scattered across the field.  She shivered as she could practically feel the charge of hemospectral spillage and the sweeps upon sweeps of culling past.

Her fangs extended fully as she thought about it and the spectators roared, her own Turquoise blue blood pumping faster throughout her system.  She wanted to start humming....

Old stains of blood, multicolored and faded, were everywhere.  Old weapons, broken and aged, falling to bits where they lay, eroding with time.  Deciding to get a better view, she scaled a pillar and got a better look around.

Scanning the dead landscape, she spotted a glimpse of something.  White.  Who else but an Ophiuchus would wear white in a fight?

She grinned, feeling the bloodlust ratchet up a notch or two.  The woman hadn't seen her yet.  She ran along one of the chains lightly, jumping down to land near her opponent.  "Hi there!~<3"  She said with her killer grin.  The other troll turned to face her.  She was older, shorter, with twisted and broken horns.  That HAD to have hurt.  She was wearing heels and a skirt, not too great for a fight like this, but perhaps it just meant she was confident in herself.  The white she was wearing was her doctor's coat, so appearantly she had followed the non-assassin's road in things.

"Ssso, we're fighting each other today, huh?"  Zai said.  "Good luck!  Sssorry we couldn't have met in a different way, I've never really had the opportunity to meet another Ophiuchussss before!"

Ofiuca didn't look quite sure what to make of the smiling troll facing her.  "Likewisssse..."  She hissed.

Zai felt a bit sorry about this, but she thought hard.  'Thisss isss my job.  It isss my duty.  If it were Venom, ssshe wouldn't hesssitate to take out her target in the way her massster commanded.  My loyalty liesss... with them.'  She thought of her friends waiting for her back at home, demanding she come back to them safely.  She thought of the rule of 'fight to the death'.  'Make it a show'.

As the fight truly started, she was ready.

Zai's vascular pump rate upped as she flash-stepped to the side and scaled up one of the stone spires.  She jumped off the side of the spike and sailed over Ofiuca's head, flinging two of the daggers at the other troll.  Ofiuca dodged them and spun to face the faster troll, but Zai was gone.  She didn't want to stick around and be gutted by the Scalpels.  She knew from experience that a troll with medical knowledge could gut someone without much effort or force with such sharp tools.

Ofiuca frowned and started to move, but stopped when she saw what Zai had dropped as she went by.  "Caltrposssss?  Sssseriousssssly?"

Zai, meanwhile, was getting a few of her traps ready while her opponent tried to navigate through the dangerous, spikey objects.  Some wire here, a few more caltrops there...

Zai heard a noise behind her and flash-stepped backwards and to the side, surprising the other Ophiuchus by snugging herself up to the other troll's side and grabbing her arm, holding the joint stiffly out to prevent the other from stabbing her.  Zai changed the grip as she crouched, braced the older troll's arm over her shoulder, and slammed down on it hard with her free hand repeatedly.  A shriek ran out as Ofiuca wrenched away and drove a scalpel into Zai's side as the two parted, retreating, leaving a spatter of new blue blood in the dust and streaking Ofiuca's lab coat.

Ofiuca leveled a deadly glare at Zai as she swallowed some pills.

Zai smiled at that.  'Anti-pain medication or a coagulent?"  she wondered.  Zai finished binding up her side and bit her tongue with a mix of chemicals.  Painkiller, extra blod-clot inducing agent, and a bit of adrenaline.

Once she deemed herself to be patched up adequately, she got back into the fray.

"Blood!  Blood!  Blood!  Blood!"  The audience was chanting.  Zai could feel a dark worm wending through her heart.  This was exciting.  Fun, even.  She could see the attraction of fighting, it was a very heady experience, but....

She couldn't afford to loose herself.

As Zai went back around the spike, she lurched to the side and dropped down into a roll as several hypodermic syringes whizzed by her and embedded themselves in the rock.  She scrambled to her feet and zipped back into the field of spires, using their cover to hide.

She could feel it building inside of her, a song.  She wanted to start singing.

She brought out her favorite weapon and looked at it fondly before she started to laugh.  It started out low, but quickly rose to an insane giggle.

"Let'ssss get thisss ssshow on the road, sssshall we~~?"
Man, this is why trolls are to be feared and respected. Even the calmer and nicer ones harbor a hidden monster.

Zai doesn't really LIKE the idea of killing people for sport... but there's something she has to do. We'll find out later. Probably.
