Shadow and Lune-Sonicverse Pre

I felt like writing Lune's backstory, or at least one version.  This is based loosely around the Sonic X universe, and the pairing is Lune and Shadow.  Lune was a prototype to Shadow, but wasn't quite what Gerald Robotnik wanted...  So here is the prologue.

Before....
"Hey... Shadow?"  
A soft voice stirred the hedgehog in his sleep.  He slowly awoke and cracked open a red eye, looking to the face of the one who woke him.
Beautiful amethyst eyes smiled down at him.  "Hey sleepyhead.  The Doctor wants to see you..."  She brushed a hand along his brow before taking it away and turning to leave.
Shadow captured her hand in his.  "Wait..."
The black Panther stopped and turned back towards him, waiting.  She had a slightly ironic smile on her face, and long black hair that brushed the back of her thighs.  She wore a black vest with purple trim and black cargo pants.  Her left shoulder was marked with three white lines, and her right eye was partially obscured by a long sweep of bangs.
Shadow frowned slightly as he brushed back those bangs.  "When are you going to get rid of these?"  He grumbled in an annoyed fashion.
She sighed, taking that hand in her free one and moving it away from her hair.  "I told you before, I like my hair this way, Shadow."
"But I don't."  He grouched.  "It hides your face."
She laughed.  "It doesn't hide THAT much.  Besides, it doesn't affect my performance, so it really doesn't matter."
"If it did?"  Shadow asked softly.
Her eyes warmed as she looked at him, and she kissed part of his hand.  "Then I'd get rid of them."  She replied seriously, her eyes meeting his.  "I'd get rid of any obstacle keeping me from you."
Shadow smiled slightly, but it faded quickly.  He was reminded of what she would have to do tomorrow.  "... It's pointless... You were MADE for me..."  He said, looking irritated.
Lune sighed.  "Shadow, it's alright.  I understand the doctor's concern."  She smiled.  "You are the 'Ultimate Life Form'.  It only suits that your mate should be as amazing."
Shadow was still frowning.
She laughed and tugged on his hands.  "Come on now, Shadow, the doctor is going to get mad at me!!  He sent me to find you a whole ten minutes ago!"  She teased.  "I need to be faster than that to impress him!"
Shadow sighed but let her pull him up.  Before they got anywhere though, he pulled her into his arms and held her for a few moments.  
She tried to keep an indignant frown on her face, but failed miserably.  She broke out in laughter, wiggling free of his arms.  "Shadow!! Come ooon, let go!!  We have to-eek!!"
She broke off as he tickled her sides mischeviously.  She managed to get loose, then proceeded to speed away on her air skates, laughing, eyes twinkling as she grew smaller.

~Wait!!~

Shadow grinned as he followed after her.  He was faster than she was, but Lune could be stealthier.  He had to keep an eye on her.... But he lost sight of her.

~Lune!  No.  You can't-  Lune!~

Shadow sighed.  He knew where she would eventually wind up.  He didn't want to give in yet though...
He heard the giggle of a child and smiled as she suddenly tried to be quiet.  'Maria.'  He thought.  He walked toward the sound, then quickly looked around the corner. He caught sight of Maria and the lady panther disappearing into a room...
Shadow followed.  Upon entering the room, however, the doctor spotted him.  "THERE you are Shadow!  What took you so long?  Didn't Lune come to find you?"
'Damn.'  Shadow thought.  "Sorry Doctor."  He said, spotting the two girls off to the side, giggling.  "It was my fault."
The doctor huffed before turning away, mumbling under his breath.  
Shadow glanced towards Maria and Lune, meeting the amethyst irises over Maria's blond head.  She smiled at him, full of warm emotion.

~Lune....~

"No!!"  Lune jumped into the way of the heavy metal arm of the haywire construction bot as it swung, shoving Maria aside.  The panther snarled, her black hair swinging behind her, long black tail lashing, her eyes turned gold instead of amethyst.  She had just enough time to turn to try and shoot it, claws extended through the slitted tips of her purple and white gloves, as it connected to the side of her head with a sickening, awful CRACK, sending her flying.  Shadow's heart clenched as he went into a spin, demolishing the robot's control unit.
Once the robot was down, Shadow rushed to where Lune was laying on the floor, so still, Maria at her side, soon joined by Robotnik.  'She's ... she's not moving...'  He was horrified.  A dark red liquid patch was spreading across her face...
"Shadow, get maria away from here."  Shadow stood, unmoving, frozen in place.  "Shadow."
'She... she can't.... be...'
"Shadow!"

~No-!~

"Lune-"
"SHADOW."  He finally looked at the doctor.  "I'll try to help Lune, but first you HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE."  He said firmly.
Shadow remained a few moments more before he tightened his fists a bit, then released them.  He turned away, and escorted the weeping girl away.
"Shadow, I'm sorry!!  It was my f-fault, wasn't it?"  Maria asked him, her eyes tearful.
He felt a stab of pain.  "No Maria.  It wasn't."  'It was mine.'  He thought to himself.  'Stupid!! If only I had been faster!  I should have been there faster!!  Now....
Lune....'

Shadow walked into the room, wincing inwardly as he saw Lune, bandaged up, laying in a suspension tube with wires and monitors recording her vitals.  One eye, her right, was covered in bandages, as was most of her head.  A breathing mask was covering her face.
The doctor awkwardly patted his shoulder.  "She isn't dead, Shadow.  She was your predecessor, after all."
Although he was relieved to hear she would live, Shadow could sense something the doctor wasn't saying though.  "... but?"
"...."  The doctor sighed and walked over to stand by Lune's chamber.  "... She's in a coma.  I'm not sure when she'll wake up...  The damage was extensive, difficult to repair."  He looked at Shadow, who felt like his heart was stopping.  "Even if... WHEN she does wake up, I'm not sure if she'll be herself.  Or what she'll remember."

~Please....~

Shadow stood by her stasis chamber, looking down at her sleeping form.  'She isn't dead.  There's still a chance-!'  Frustrated, he almost slammed his fist down on the clear covering, but stopped at the last second, instead placing his palm against it.  "Lune... Please wake up."

~I don't want to see any more...~

The base was under attack.  Explosions rocked the station.  Shadow was worried, but surely the doctor would-
His blood ran cold as the medical bay blew.
'Lune-!'
"Aah!!"  Shadow snapped out of it.  Maria needed him.  The doctor would make sure Lune was safe.  He was sure of it.

~Let me wake up!!~

"Maria!!!"
The girl smiled sweetly at Shadow with tears in her eyes.  "Shadow... Give people a chance to be happy...."
"MARIA!!!"  The pod jettisoned-

~WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!~


Shadow sat bolt upright, eyes wide and shaken from that nightmare.  He quickly worked on composing himself, at least on the outside.  He could NOT afford to show weakness.... '… Damn....'  He rubbed his face, leaning back against the tree he was sleeping in.  He had hoped, when he remembered her, that Lune had lived.  But, it had been so long... he had no real hope of that.  Lune was likely dead, just like everyone else he had known.
He would be alone, unchanging... forever.
His heart hurt him too much to return to sleep, so instead, he looked up at the moon.  "... Lune."
